Dr. Demirhan R. Tunç (1980-2021)
Heart to Heart Anatolia, Inc. (H2HA) proudly announces a memorial scholarship in honor of Dr. Demirhan R. Tunc. The purpose of this scholarship is to honor and memorialize Dr. Tunç’s ideals and humanity. Applicants eligible for the general H2HA scholarship may also apply for this scholarship by simply mentioning that they wish to be considered for H2HA-DTMS. Candidates majoring in mathematics, data science, or computer science and pursuing a graduate degree will be given priority.
Demirhan R. Tunc (1980-2021) was born in Istanbul on April 23 rd, 1980. After graduating from Huseyin Avni Sözen Anadolu high school he joined Bilgi University in Istanbul majoring in Computer Science. His Mathematics professor at Bilgi, Dr. Ali Nesin, encouraged him to consider majoring in Mathematics instead, which he did. After graduating from Bilgi University, he started working as a teaching assistant for Dr. Ali Nesin, and at the same time, started a Master's Program in Mathematics at Bogazici University. In 2005 he was admitted to the University of Notre Dame to pursue (UND) a Ph.D. in Mathematics. At UND, he played basketball and made many friends. Demirhan was very much loved by his friends who remember him as someone who never lets you down and is always there for you. Every summer break, Demirhan traveled to Şirince, Turkey, to teach at Ali Nesin Mathematics Village. After graduation from Notre Dame, he started teaching Mathematics at Dominican University in River Forest, IL. Where he taught for more than seven years.
Being a very curious mind, Demirhan pursued an MBA degree at Dominican University while teaching full-time. He completed the MBA program successfully and later preferred to work as a Data Scientist working Cloud5 Communications, a Chicago-based Networks company. There, he developed models and machine-learning solutions in various languages such as R and Python. He also continued teaching Business Statistics at Dominican University.
He loved birds, nature, and the sky, and spent most of his free time chasing the beauties of nature. On June 1 st, 2021, Demirhan unexpectedly and suddenly passed away. Demirhan will forever remain a gentle and special soul and will forever live in the hearts of his friends and family. He also holds a special place among the members of the Heart to Heart Anatolia Community. This scholarship was established to honor Dermirhan forever!
